Adrian Smooth Leather Tassel Loafer
About the original
The Dr. Martens Adrian Smooth Leather Tassel Loafer (style 14573001) is the brand's tassel loafer, built on a Goodyear-welted Z-welt sole with the air-cushioned PVC outsole that Klaus Maertens first patented in 1945 and Dr. Martens has used since the Airwair 1461 debuted in Wollaston, England on April 1, 1960. The Adrian launched in the 1980s, adopted quickly by mod and 2 tone ska subcultures, and uses Polished Smooth leather on a kiltie-and-tassel vamp. It retails for $160 on drmartens.com. The SS23 Supreme version (sold by Dr. Martens as style 31372001, 31372416 and 31373935) uses the same Adrian last and construction in three colorways: black smooth, royal-blue smooth, and cowhide hair-on, with Supreme foil stamping on the insole and a mono-color sole.
About Dr. Martens
Dr. Martens is a British footwear brand whose air-cushioned sole was invented in 1947 by Dr. Klaus Maertens and Dr. Herbert Funck in Seeshaupt, Germany, after Maertens rebuilt his army boots with a rubber sole made from reclaimed tires. R. Griggs Group of Northamptonshire bought the UK patent rights in 1959 and produced the eight-eyelet 1460 boot in cherry-red smooth leather on April 1, 1960, at its Cobbs Lane factory in Wollaston. The 1461 shoe and 2976 Chelsea followed. Permira acquired the company in 2014 and floated it on the LSE in 2021. Supreme has collaborated with Dr. Martens on co-branded 1460 boots and Chelsea silhouettes.
