Spitfire Wheels was founded in 1987 in San Francisco under NHS Fun Factory, the same company that owns Independent Trucks and Santa Cruz Skateboards, and the Classic '87 Swirl graphic pulls its swirl pattern from the flame halo around Spitfire's Bighead logo.
