Burberry is a British fashion house founded in 1856 by 21-year-old Thomas Burberry in Basingstoke, Hampshire. In 1879 Burberry invented gabardine, a breathable, water-resistant fabric woven from waterproofed yarn and patented in 1888. The company supplied outerwear to polar explorers including Fridtjof Nansen and Ernest Shackleton, and developed the trench coat for British officers in World War I.
