Original — Kojima Shōten
Kyo-Jibari Chōchin (Paper Lantern)
About the original
Kojima Shōten is a Kyoto chōchin (paper lantern) workshop founded in 1789 during the late Edo period, currently run by tenth-generation craftsman Ryo Kojima. Each lantern is built using the kyo-jibari method: a single bamboo strip wound around a wooden mold, then layered with handmade washi paper and finished with hand-painted calligraphy. A 30 cm lantern takes one full day to complete. The workshop traditionally supplies lanterns to Kyoto temples, shrines, and ryokan inns, including festival pieces for Gion Matsuri. The FW2022 Supreme version is a chōchin hand-painted with the Supreme box logo by Kojima craftsmen using the same techniques applied to temple commissions; released September 22, 2022 at $298.
About Kojima Shōten
Kojima Shōten is a Japanese chochin (paper lantern) workshop founded in the late 1700s during the Kansei era in the Higashiyama district of Kyoto, Japan. The studio is now run by the ninth generation of the Kojima family, and every lantern is built by hand: splitting bamboo into ribs, winding the frame, and pasting washi paper one panel at a time using techniques passed down for over 200 years. Kojima Shōten supplies temples and shrines across Kyoto and has collaborated with Karimoku Furniture and Norm Architects on contemporary pendant lights. Supreme commissioned Kojima Shōten to produce a co-branded chochin paper lantern, hand-built using the same traditional methods.
