Supreme x Murano Ashtray
Supreme vs. Original

Original — Murano
Hand-Blown Murano Glass Ashtray (Sommerso)
About the original
Murano glass has been hand-blown on the Venetian island of Murano since 1291, when Venice's glassmaking guilds were relocated there to contain furnace fires and protect trade secrets. The island still hosts dozens of working furnaces operating under the Vetro Artistico Murano trademark, an EU-recognized mark of origin established by Veneto regional law in 1994. Hand-blown ashtrays in the sommerso (submerged) technique, which suspends color within clear glass through layered pours, were a Murano signature in the 1960s and remain a hallmark of mid-century Italian glasswork. The FW2024 Supreme version is a hand-blown sommerso ashtray made by a Murano artisan, with a Supreme logo set into the base; it released October 17, 2024 at $498.
About Murano
Murano is not a brand but a glassmaking tradition centered on the island of Murano in the Venetian Lagoon, Italy. Venice consolidated its glass furnaces on Murano by law in 1291 to contain fire risk and protect trade secrets, and the island became Europe's leading luxury glass center through the Renaissance. Murano artisans developed cristallo (a near-transparent soda-lime glass), lattimo (opaque white milk glass), aventurine, and millefiori techniques still used today. Production remains concentrated in family-run furnaces such as Venini, Barovier & Toso, and Seguso, all tracing lineage back centuries. Supreme has commissioned Murano-made glass objects, including hand-blown ashtrays produced on the island.
