About the original
The Smurfs, known in French as Les Schtroumpfs, were created by Belgian cartoonist Pierre Culliford, pen name Peyo, and first appeared in the comic Johan et Pirlouit in 1958. The characters are three apples tall, blue-skinned, and wear white Phrygian caps; the caps themselves are the defining piece of Smurf visual identity and read as beanies in contemporary translation. The franchise is licensed today by IMPS, the Brussels-based rights holder founded by the Culliford family. The FW2020 Supreme version is a cuffed acrylic knit beanie with a large embroidered Smurf character peeking over the cuff, produced under IMPS license and released in yellow, black, camo, and white with no standalone retail counterpart.
About Smurfs
The Smurfs are a Belgian comics property created in 1958 by cartoonist Pierre Culliford, known as Peyo, in Brussels. The blue, three-apple-tall characters first appeared as supporting cast in the comic strip Johan et Pirlouit before getting their own series, Les Schtroumpfs, published by Dupuis. The property expanded globally through the Hanna-Barbera animated series that aired on NBC from 1981 to 1989, followed by feature films from Sony Pictures Animation beginning in 2011. The franchise is now managed by IMPS, the licensing company founded by Peyo's estate. Supreme has released apparel featuring Smurfs artwork under license.
